En el año 2016, el consumo procedente de energías renovables alcanzó el 17% en la Unión Europea, duplicando el porcentaje registrado en 2004, el primer año en el que estos datos están disponibles, publicados por el Eurostat, la Oficina de Estadística de la Unión Europea.
La proporción de renovables en el consumo energético final, es uno de los indicadores titulares de la estrategia europea 2020. El objetivo de la unión es el de obtener 20% de consumo final procedente de fuentes renovables para 2020 y al menos 27% para el 2030.
Fuentes de energía
La producción primaria de energías renovables dentro de los 28 Estados Miembros fue de 211 millones de toneladas. En porcentaje, la cantidad de energía producida dentro de la Unión aumentó 66.6% en los diez años de 2006 a 2016, lo que equivale a un crecimiento medio al año de 5.3%.
La fuente más importante de energía renovable en la UE fue la madera, junto con otros biocombustibles sólidos, así como los desechos renovables, contabilizando un 44.7% de la producción. La energía hidroeléctrica fue la segunda fuente que más contribuyó al mix energético con un 14.3% de la producción y en tercer lugar la eólica con un 12.4%.
Por otro lado, y aunque su producción ha permanecido relativamente baja, hubo una expansión particularmente rápida en la producción eólica y solar. Este último, contabilizando una proporción de 6.3% de la energía renovable producida en 2016; mientras que la energía geotérmica representó un 3.2% del total.
Suecia, a la cabeza de producción renovable
Suecia, con más de la mitad de su energía procedente de fuentes renovables, en su consumo final obtuvo el mayor porcentaje en 2016, por delante de Finlandia (38.7%), Letonia (37.2%), Austria (33.5€) y Dinamarca (32.2%).
En el extremo opuesto de la escala, las proporciones de renovables más bajas fueron registradas por Luxemburgo (5,4%), Malta y Países Bajos (ambos del 6%). No obstante, comparado con 2015, el consumo energético de fuentes renovables ha aumentado en 15 de los 28 Países Miembros.
Cada Estado miembro de la Unión Europea tiene sus propios objetivos a alcanzar en 2020. Los objetivos nacionales tienen en cuenta los diferentes puntos de comienzo de los Estados miembros, el potencial de energías renovables y el rendimiento económico.
