La compañía alemana Siemens está desarrollando en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Hamburgo y Hamburg Energie, un nuevo sistema de almacenamiento de energía renovable en piedras.

Future Energy Solution (FES) consiste en que el superávit de energía de origen renovable se almacena en piedras naturales que la guardan en forma de calor, para posteriormente, volver a transformarla en electricidad.

Así lo explicó Alejandro Preinfalk, vicepresidente de Energy Managment en México y Centroamérica, quien también resaltó que el diseño es sencillo, rentable, puede utilizarse como complemento para los sistemas de almacenamiento ya existentes, y forma parte de la gama que tiene la empresa para almacenar electricidad de fuentes limpias.

¿El objetivo? Aprovechar el superávit de los picos de producción de las energías renovables, y cubrir la creciente demanda energética de forma sostenible, destacó Preinfalk.

De la misma forma apuntó que Siemens ha logrado energía limpia a través de distintas tecnologías: la electrolisis, baterías modulares o piedras naturales, que eventualmente se podrían traer a México donde cada vez es mayor la generación de energía eólica o solar.

Cabe señalar que en México el uso de energías renovables crece a doble dígito y donde empresas como la mexicana Enlight, considerada una de las más innovadoras del sector, están introduciendo sistemas de energía solar inteligentes que generan ahorros importantes para el sector comercial o residencial.

Otra de las tecnologías pioneras de Siemens es la Silycer 200, capaz de producir grandes cantidades de hidrógeno a partir del excedente de energía renovable de parques eólicos y solares. Se trata de una máquina que extrae hidrógeno casi puro a partir del agua y de la electricidad como materias primas, con un rendimiento muy alto del 75%.

Esta tecnología funciona a través de la técnica de la electrolisis PEM, que emplea agua, electricidad y una membrana de intercambio de protones para almacenar el excedente en forma de hidrógeno y permite aprovechar toda la capacidad de energía generada, incluso en los picos de producción.
